Website baker could be compared to a Joomla-style CMS, but is much less overwhelming. It has the right amount of functionality to make a solid website that will make clients quick to understand it, and happy to use it.

Current Version: 2.8.1

Cost: Free

Development: Community

Hosting: Your Server

License: GNU GPL

Programming: PHP

Database: MySQL

Our Impressions:

It has the right amount of features for what it aims to do. It would work well for simple websites that may need to be edited by non technical people later. It has great permissions allowing you to customize what your client sees, a nice media uploader, and the ability to add modules if needed.

The admin interface accomplishes what it needs to, but it isn’t pretty and it can get repetitive at times to accomplish tasks. The media uploader is nice, but doesn’t integrate in with when a user wants to put a photo into their page layout.

It sounds like the original author of the Website Baker CMS has left the project and headed for greener pastures. But the newly founded Website Baker’s Association has picked up where they left off and just released version 2.8. This release integrates droplets, the JQuery library, allows for a skinnable backend, and you can now upload zip files to the media folder, and it will automatically unzip and list them within the CMS.
