Our Impressions:

Joomla is best for developers and those that need a powerful, extensible CMS. It is a solid offering that has a lot of functionality, while not being overwhelming on the first login. It can accomplish a lot with only the core, and is especially adept when you consider all of the third-party extensions that are available for it. There is a huge community backing Joomla so the good news is you generally can get fast help on their forums.

Developing themes may not be as easy when compared to other systems. Joomla has a large community devoted to it, with a million module creators, but that can get frustrating to find the right one for your needs. Sometimes you have to resort to using commercial modules which can cost a lot of money.

A digital agency named Water and Stone has put together a research report about the popularity and usage of varying open source content management systems. Its an interesting quick read, but if you just want the cliffs notes, then here’s their summary:

The Big Three — WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal — remain firmly in command of the market.

• WordPress has taken the lead in brand strength after a strong growth year.

• The gap continues to narrow between .NET market leader DotNetNuke and contender Umbraco. This continues the trend observed in the 2009 Report.

• Liferay leads the Java WCM market, though Alfresco is not far behind and in fact leads in several metrics.

• Up and coming systems to watch include: Concrete5 and Umbraco.

• Systems possibly at risk include: Textpattern and Xoops.

Joomla 1.6 Arrives

The new version of Joomla has finally arrived. Version 1.6. While it has been in beta for a long time, this is the final release that is ready for the public. This release brings better access controls, a user-defined category structure, easier installation, extended language support, and hundreds of other features. Open Source Awards 2010

Packt has announced their yearly Open Source Awards, awarding CMS Made Simple the winner of Open Source CMS, with Silverstripe and MODx trailing close behind. That said, they separated Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla into another category called “Hall of Fame CMS” which means they won all of the other years. As a result of a tie between Drupal and WordPress, an extra independent judge was brought in for a decisive vote. Here are the results.

Bugfixes All Around

CMS Made Simple has released two updates recently, moving quickly from 1.6.1 to 1.6.2. Wordpress released 2.8.1 awhile ago which fixed some larger bugs and a few security vulnerabilities, then just recently released 2.8.2 which fixes a XSS vulnerability. Finally, Joomla went quickly from 1.5.13 to 1.5.14 the first of which was a security release, and the second had a few more bugfixes.

Big Name Updates

A lot of the big names in CMS land have release minor updates for their systems. Joomla has released 1.5.12 which contains a number of bug fixes and some moderate-level security fixes. Drupal 6.13 and 5.19 are maintenance releases fixing problems reported using the bug tracking system, as well as critical security vulnerabilities. TYPO3 has released 4.2.8, 4.1.12 and 4.0.13 that contain only bugfixes and minor security improvements.
