SXSW Roundup

We attended several CMS-related panels at SXSW including:

Is Wordpress Killing Web Design? – This wasn’t as much a discussion about Wordpress as much as CMS’s themselves. The discussion revolved around the pros/cons of themes, and how we, as designers, have gotten lazy at creatively laying out content within the “editable area”
R.I.P. Content Management System – This panel’s speaker was Dries Buytaert who created Drupal. Mostly it was just a presentation on Drupal and how it is being used by developers to create really complex, social websites. Coincidentally, we also were on the same plane as Dries on the way home.
ExpressionEngine 2.0: Total Domination – This one was our favorite. Hosted by a variety of different EE community members, it started with a simple overview of what EE is and how it works. Then progressed down the line of panelists with helpful tips starting with simple theming tips, and ending with complex plugins and whatnot.

SXSW was a completely new experience for us and certainly CMS’s are a big part of what the “interactive” space is involved with. We visited with some of the vendors who were hawking their new CMS’s, we got to meet people we’d met in CMS forums, and we shared a few laughs with fellow designers/developers about the joys/pains of working with them.

News Cleanup

Not a ton of huge news for CMS’s that we’re following currently, but enough to warrant a quick clean-up post for a few of them: Wordpress released version 2.9.2 which is a security release that fixes a problem for logged in users being able to see other’s trash bins. Symphony announced upcoming plans for version 2.1. ExpressionEngine released another round of public betas today that clean up outstanding issues. And remember kids, World Plone Day is coming up on April 28th.

ExpressionEngine 2.0 Beta Released!

We’ve had the pleasure of downloading and installing the ExpressionEngine 2.o Beta. A day that we never thought might come. While we’re not going to call it bug-free, the maker’s of EE are staying on top of the problems and fixing them as fast as they can as part of the public Beta. The new interface is a beauty to use, and our favorite new feature is the media/file manager, makes us wish every CMS had something like that. Check out all the excitement for yourself.

Finally! A release date and some real information! ExpressionEngine 2.0 will officially launch on December 1st. We’re finally getting a dump of information from EllisLab, and most of it can be found right now on EEInsider.com, all posted during their EE2 Week. For those that are interested, here’s the rundown:

ExpressionEngine 2.0 Beta, Phase 2

Yep, you heard that right. You have one more chance to partake in the EE 2.0 beta program. This will be the final round of beta testing that the program will undergo before it is declared final and released to the masses. The good news is that anyone has a chance to partake this time, not just extension/plugin developers. If you’d like a chance, check out the blog to sign up, there are a few requirements before you can submit your name.

ExpressionEngine 2.0 Beta1 Completed

Yawn… Some have said that it’s vaporware, while others vehemently disagree. But everyone knows it’s getting hard to keep looking forward to something that you thought was going to come out a year ago. According to the company blog, ExpressionEngine 2.0 Beta1 is finished, but don’t get too excited, there’s still a Beta2. So far the only promises are that the new version will be out before SXSW 2010… which is in March.
