Our Impressions:

CMS Made Simple is kinda like the lighter version of Joomla CMS system. It has all of the basic stuff you want and need in a CMS system without getting too complicated. It has a nice news feature to allow you to keep an updated blog or news section at your website without problems.

CMS Made Simple has come a long way as far as layout and ease of use, but its not fully there yet. It can still feel a little clunky at times, and could use some polish in the design and layout areas.

Open Source Awards 2010

Packt has announced their yearly Open Source Awards, awarding CMS Made Simple the winner of Open Source CMS, with Silverstripe and MODx trailing close behind. That said, they separated Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla into another category called “Hall of Fame CMS” which means they won all of the other years. As a result of a tie between Drupal and WordPress, an extra independent judge was brought in for a decisive vote. Here are the results.

CMS Made Simple 1.9 “Bora Bora”

CMS Made Simple just had a large 1.9 update where they added “features, features, and more features”. You can now customize the URL any way you’d like, disabling the WYSIWYG editor, a new admin theme, and the ability to have a “Site Down” page during maintenance.

Maintenance Releases

Here’s a quick rundown of some minor maintenance releases by some of the CMS’s out there. CMS Made Simple 1.6.5 Poya is mostly a bug fix release, but some of them are important. Our favorite Ruby CMS came out with 0.8.1 – Luster Release, but we’ll be honest and admit that we couldn’t figure out what the changes were. TYPOlight 2.7.3 was released which fixes issues with the calendar extension. Finally, Plone 3.3.1 is out which features a performance fix, translation updates and several stability improvements.

Minor Releases

Everybody has to clean up some code some time or another, minor releases are most CMS’s way to doing this. Ready? Wordpress 2.8.4 is a security release, CMS Made Simple 1.6.4 “Moindou” fixes some minor bugs. And finally SilverStripe 2.3.3 is also a bugfix that cleans up a few stray things with the latest version of PHP.

Bugfixes All Around

CMS Made Simple has released two updates recently, moving quickly from 1.6.1 to 1.6.2. Wordpress released 2.8.1 awhile ago which fixed some larger bugs and a few security vulnerabilities, then just recently released 2.8.2 which fixes a XSS vulnerability. Finally, Joomla went quickly from 1.5.13 to 1.5.14 the first of which was a security release, and the second had a few more bugfixes.
